Grandmaster is the new Name-Game Show being aired in Vijay TV. Mr. G.S. Pradeep is the grandmaster who tries to find out the personality that the contestant has in his/her mind. The rules are simple and are given here. Seeing this program reminded me of a similar situation that happened a year before. It was not a game show but I could draw some parallels to it. Even I was only required to answer a yes/no. Only this time the goal was not to find the personality that I had in my mind but rather to find out who I was!
I and two of my friends visited vaitheeswaran koil last year. This place is famous for the sevvai temple (Lord Mars) and also for Naadi Josiyam. It is believed that Sage Agasthya has written all about us in palm leaves. Naadi means thumb impression. So all we have to do is give our thumb impression and the astrologers would pick a set of palm leaves pertaining to that thumb impression. Then there would be a one on one interaction, where the astrologer would try to find the leaf that has all our details. Looks like a tall tale. I wanted to check if that was true. So I and my friend wore our Sherlock homes hat and decided to investigate.
Sage Agasthya
As soon as we reached vaitheeswaran koil, we gave our thumb impression. The astrologer told us that it might take some time to find the correct lot of palm leaves and in the mean time asked us to visit the temple. We had a quick darshan and were back to the astrology centre in 10 minutes. The art of nadi josiyam is taught like the old gurukula system. The students have to stay with their guru, do their house chores and then learn. One of the astrologers brought a set of palm leaves. The deal was that he would find my palm leaf by asking few questions and I just had to answer a yes/no. Once he finds my leaf I have to pay him else there was no charge.
The game started and the astrologer started reciting some poem that was written in the palm leaf. He would stop after reading a poem and then questioned me “Were u born in the month of Thai (Jan-Feb)"?
Me: "No"
Leaf one gone. He would take the next leaf and would continue this ritual.
“Were you born in the year 1980”?
Some mumbling and then “Does your father name start with Ra, Re, Ri, Rai"?
This went on for a while and he had read from most of the palm leaves. I had lost interest by then. He went on for a while reciting some names.
"Is your name karthik/karthikeyan" ?
Me: "Yes"
Then he got a couple of questions wrong. It was not my leaf. The next one had similar names as the previous one and then he asked
"Is your name karthik"?
Some mumbling and then “Is your father name Manoharan”?
I was shocked. I was wondering if I had given him any clue.
He continued from the same leaf. Some recital of the poem and then “Is your mother’s name Janaki"?
Some mumbling “You have a sister and her name is kanchan”?
Me: "Yes". On one side I was shocked but on the other side I was pleasantly surprised.
Some mumbling “Your mother had a child before you but the child is dead”.
OK. That’s it. I gave up. No point in refusing to believe in it. He went on and said about my education and work, though there was not any actual reference to Engineering and software. But the game was already over. He found out who I was. He found out my year of birth and the date and finally drew the astrological chart. I later checked it against my horoscope and it matched perfectly.
The ways of our mind is very peculiar. It doesn’t believe in things easily. Ok. Maybe it was a fluke or some one from this centre had spied on me during my entire life to know all these details. In went my friend. I wanted to accompany him. The leaf had his parent’s name, his brother's name, as well as his wife's name (He was recently married at that time). Both of us were dumb founded. The astrologer promised us to tell us about our future but we were not interested.
My pride was hurt on that day. I realized that astrology is a form of science. Only we have not studied it well. Maybe there are very few people who have mastered this subject. There is no point in blaming the subject just because a prediction by a particular astrologer has gone wrong.
If you happen to visit vaitheeswaran koil, try naadi josiyum. There is nothing to lose. To me, Sage Agasthya is the grandmaster.
UPDATE : I have been getting lots of request to know about the Naadi center I visited. The one I went to was opposite to the entrance of Vaitheeswaran temple. I think it was named agasthiyar nadi centre. I am not publicizing or marketing the centre. I visited it and found it satisfactory. Please do so at your own risk.
